What's at Stake and the Issues of the 2005 Elections
Today in Liberia, we face four great challenges above all others - First, to reconstruct and develop the country; second, to ensure that peace and security is sustained throughout Liberia and within the Mano River Region; third, to promote good governance and the fight against corruption; and fourth, to improve the economy, education, health care and provide jobs. To meet these challenges, we must elect the right candidates that will lead us for the next four years and more....
Massive corruption, lack of transparency, accountability and good governance in Liberia have greatly undermine the economic, development and all of these efforts for many years. With Liberia returning from a 14-year old civil war, failure to elect the right candidates for President, the Senate and Representative, and other local officials in 2005 will have devastating impact on the country’s reconstruction and development efforts.
The lack of good governance in
Liberia will threaten the confidence and interest of donor nations and will
continue to harm the economic recovery process, reconstruction,
development and the stability of the country. It will further drive
the Liberian people deeper into poverty and suffering. The
importance of the 2005 General Elections can not be over emphasized.
